How long should you let Rit dye sit?
It really depends on the desired shade and fabric. To achieve the color on the box or bottle, we suggest 30 to 60 minutes with continuous stirring. For lighter shades, we suggest 10 to 20 minutes.
How long does Rit dye remover take?
Wet the item you are going to be removing the color from and add it to the bath. Stir occasionally. Some fabrics will lose their color in as fast as 10 minutes, others can take up to 20 minutes. Once your garment turns white or off-white, you can remove it from the bath.
How long does Rit dye last once mixed?
How long can I keep a dye once it has been mixed with water? Do not add water to dye until you are prepared to apply it. Apply dye within 24 hours after mixing. Dye left unapplied after 24 hours will begin to lose concentration and will result in noticeably weaker color intensity.

Rit has an unlimited shelf life. When storing liquid dyes, be sure the cap is secure to prevent evaporation. Powder dyes should be stored in a cool, dry place. If you want to store powder dye after it has been mixed with water, you can do so in an airtight container.
Why did my Rit dye not work?
This is generally caused by: (a) a combination of too much fabric and too little water in the washing machine or (b) the fabric got twisted during the dyeing cycle. When dyeing in a top loader machine, check your fabric frequently. If it gets twisted, stop the machine and untwist it.
Can I soak fabric in Rit dye overnight?
Rit Dye is the best for this! My only tip is to leave them in the washer, soaking in the dye bath for several hours or even overnight to get the darkest black possible.
Can I pour Rit dye down the drain?
Yes! Rit products may be safely flushed through both sewer and septic systems.
Will vinegar set Rit dye?
Vinegar is useless, if you are dyeing cotton. However, if you are using an all-purpose dye such as Rit, neither vinegar nor soda ash will set the dye. The only way to set Rit dye on cotton, so that it does not bleed badly in the laundry, is to buy a commercial dye fixative such as Retayne.

- Rinse the fabric under cool, running water. Launder the fabric following the manufacturer’s care instructions.
