What does it mean when it says service provider locked?

When a handset is locked it means it will only work with the provider from whom you bought it. If your phone is locked it won’t automatically become unlocked when your contract expires with your provider. You’ll have to specifically ask your carrier to unlock it.

Can my service provider unlock my phone?

No, a factory reset will not relock / re-enable the network lock on your phone. Once you officially unlocked your device, it should stay that way for good even when your receive software updates. However, if you reflash your phone with the official firmware from your provider, you may relock your phone.

Is it illegal to unlock a phone under contract?

It is not technically illegal to unlock a phone that is under contract. However, many cell phone companies lock the device if you have an installment payment plan so that they can guarantee that you will remain with them under contract until the phone is paid off.

Will a factory reset remove my carrier?

It will not erase any of your carrier information. That’s stored on the SIM and with your carrier.

Can I unlock my phone myself for free?

Yes, it is legal to unlock phones. More importantly, the FCC has mandated that all carriers should unlock phones for their consumers for free, if a consumer so desires. That said, you need to know whether your phone is eligible to be unlocked. The FCC isn’t giving you a free pass to con the carriers.

Can I unlock my phone before my contract ends?

Yes. Under Ofcom regulations, customers have the right to unlock their mobile phone if they have reached the end of a contract or the phone is over a year old. As we’ve seen above, most will do it even before that. Furthermore, as mentioned above, once we’re out of contract, they must unlock our handset free of charge.

Is phone still unlocked after factory reset?

Your phone will be the way it came, unlocked and unrooted. It will stay unlocked and rooted. However all of your apps, settings, and data will be deleted.

Does erasing iPhone remove carrier?

A restore as new does not affect the account/carrier information on the device. so just no matter what carrier, phone, or update, it doesnt touch the SIM card.
